நெஞ்சக் கனகல்லு நெகிழ்ந் துருகத்
தஞ்சத்து அருள் சண்முகனுக்கு இயல்சேர்
செஞ்சொல் புனைமாலை சிறந்திடவே
பஞ்சக்கர ஆனை பதம் பணிவாம்

nenjak kanakallu negizhndhu urugath
thanjaththu aruL saNmuganukku iyalsEr
senjol punaimAlai siRandhidavE
panjakkara Anai padham paNivAm

Most humbly I bow, and offer homage at the Sacred Feet of five-armed Vinaayaga seeking the His sacred blessings] for the best garland-like composition of Sacred songs [Kanthar Anuboodhi] consisting of graceful Tamil literary words, which are capable of mellowing and melting down anyone’s stone-like heart, as an ornament for God Shanmukan [Aarumukan], who bestows grace on everyone, who seeks refuge from Him.

1. ஆடும் பரிவேல் அணிசேவல் எனப்
பாடும் பணியே பணியாய் அருள்வாய்
தேடும் கயமா முகனைச் செருவில்
சாடும் தனி யானை சகோதரனே!

Adum parivEl aNisEval enap
pAdum paNiyE paNiyAi aruLvAi
thEdum kayamA muganaich cheruvil
sAdum thaniyAnai sagOdharanE!.

O, Lord Kanthaa! Please grant me the gracious boon, so that singing in praise of Your [horse-like vehicle of] dancing peacock, your lance, and the beautiful rooster shall be the work of my lifetime! You are the brother of Lord Vinaayaka-perumaan, who destroyed the demon Gajamukaasuran in battle when the demon had assumed the form of a huge elephant’s head and] went in search of the celestials [whom he regarded as his enemies]

2. உல்லாச நிராகுல யோக விதச்
சல்லாப விநோதனும் நீ அலையோ
எல்லாம் அற என்னை இழந்த நலம்
சொல்லாய் முருகா சுரபூ பதியே!

2. ullAsa nirAkula yOga vidhach
challAba vinOdhanum nee alaiyO
ellAm aRa ennai izhandha nalam
sollAi murugA surabU padhiyE!.

O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, You are the king of the celestials! You are the unique Lord, who knows of neither joy nor sorrow, and who talks with devotees about several kinds of yoga-practices which delight them. Please be gracious enough to expound to me those spiritual precepts, which will remove my arrogant egoism and attachment [to persons and things of the world]!

3. வானோ புனல்பார் கனல் மாருதமோ
ஞானோதயமோ நவில் நான்மறையோ
யானோ மனமோ எனையாண்ட இடம்
தானோ பொரு ளாவது சண்முகனே?

3. vAnO punalpAr kanal mArudhamO
njAnOdhayamO navil nAnmaRaiyO
yAnO manamO enaiyANda idam
thAnO poru LAvadhu saNmuganE?.

O, God Sanmukaa! What is the Supreme Being like? Is it the sky, the water, the earth, the fire, or the air? Is it perceivable by one’s wisdom? Is it the four Vedas, which are being recited? Is it the soul that is referred to as ‘I’ ? Is it the mind? Is it Your Supreme Self, who graciously accepted me as Your devotee [by saying, ‘Yourself is myself’, and ‘myself is Yourself’]?

4. வளைபட்ட கை மாதொடு மக்கள் எனும்
தளைபட்டு அழியத் தகுமோ தகுமோ
கிளைபட்டு எழு சூர் உரமும் கிரியும்
தொளைபட்டு உருவத் தொடு வேலவனே!

4. vaLaipatta kai mAdhodu makkaL enum
thaLaipattu azhiyath thagumO thagumO
kiLaipattu ezhu sUr uramum giriyum
thoLaipattu uruvath thodu vElavanE!.

O, Lord Kanthaa! Is it really fair that I should be ruined as the result of being caught up in the [family] relationship of my wife, whose wrist is adorned with bangles, and of my children? O, Lord, You have the lance, which You hurled at the warring demon Soorapanman to pierce and penetrate his chest as well as the kraunca-hill, where he was hiding with his kinsmen.

5. மக மாயை களைந்திட வல்ல பிரான்
முகம் ஆறு மொழிந்து மொழிந்திலனே!
அகம் ஆடை மடந்தையர் என்று அயரும்
சக மாயையுள் நின்று தயங்குவதே!

5. maga mAyai kaLaindhida valla pirAn
mugam ARu mozhindhu mozhindhilanE!
agam Adai madandhaiyar endRu ayarum
saga mAyaiyuL nindRu thayangkuvadhE!.

The all-powerful Lord Thirumurugapperumaan with Six Sacred Faces expounded to me several precepts in order to get rid of the great deceitful illusion of this worldly life. Alas, I failed to [remember and] say those precepts. [After being caught up in the worldly illusion about one’s home, clothes and women [which in the end only brings me great distress], I am still being hesitant, believing it to be real!

6. திணியான மனோ சிலை மீது, உனதாள்
அணியார், அரவிந்தம் அரும்பு மதோ?
பணியாஎன, வள்ளி பதம் பணியும்
தணியா அதிமோக தயா பரனே.

6. thiNiyAna manOsilaimeedhu unadhuthAL
aNi Ar aravindham arumbumadhO?
paNiyA ena vaLLipadham paNiyum
thaNiyA adhimOga thayA baranE!.

O, Lord, will Your beautiful lotus-flower-like Sacred Feet ever blossom over the hard stone-like heart of mine? O, Lord of compassion! You have the great undiminished love for the Sacred Feet of Valli-ammaiyaar! Could You please tell me about the tasks, which I have to carry out?

7. கெடுவாய் மனனே, கதிகேள், கரவாது
இடுவாய், வடிவேல் இறைதாள் நினைவாய்
சுடுவாய் நெடு வேதனை தூள்படவே
விடுவாய் விடுவாய் வினை யாவையுமே.

7. keduvAi mananE gadhi kEL: karavAdhu
iduvAi; vadivEl iRaithAL ninaivAi;
suduvAi nedu vEdhanai thULpadavE;
viduvAi viduvAi vinai yAvaiyumE!.

O, mind! You are really destroying yourself! You’d better listen to me as to how you may redeem yourself, and attain salvation! Whatever things you may have, give it to others in need without concealing it from them! Remember the Sacred Feet of the lance-bearing God Muruga, and go on meditating upon them! You’d better also burn down your attachment to life which is continuously causing you agony as a result of your birth in this world! Give up all deeds which arise from your attachment [to persons and things of the worldly life], and stay away from such deeds

8.அமரும் பதிகேள், அகம்ஆம் எனும் இப்
பிமரம் கெடமெய்ப் பொருள்பே சியவா
குமரன் கிரிராச குமாரி மகன்
சமரம் பெரு தானவ நாசகனே.

8. amarum padhikEL agamAm enumip
pimarangkeda meipporuL pEsiyavA
kumaran girirAsa kumAri magan
samaram poru dhAnava nAsaganE.

8. O, Lord Kumaraa! You are the eternally youthful Son of Goddess Paarvathi, daughter of the king of the (Himaalaya) mountain, You are the preceptor, who has expounded to me the Real Truth, so that I can get rid of my illusion about my village, relatives, and myself! You are the Lord, who annihilated the warring demons (including Soorapanman) in battle!

9. மட்டூர் குழல் மங்கையர் மையல் வலைப்
பட்டு, ஊசல்படும் பரிசு என்று ஒழிவேன்?
தட்டு ஊடு அற வேல் சயிலத்து எறியும்
நிட்டூர நிராகுல, நிர்பயனே.

9. mattUrkuzhal manggaiyar maiyal valaip
pattUsal padum parisendRozhivEn
thattUdaRa vEl sayilath theRiyum
nittUra nirAgula nirppayanE.

9. O, Lord, when will I get away from the suffering of my mind being caught and bewildered in the net of passion for women, whose hair is adorned with fragrant and honey-trickling flowers? You are the fearless and grief-free Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who hurled the lance, which pierced and penetrated [the kraunca-hill] without any obstruction!

10. கார் மா மிசை காலன் வரில், கலபத்
தேர்மா மிசை வந்து, எதிரப் படுவாய்
தார் மார்ப, வலாரி தலாரி எனும்
சூர்மா மடியத் தொடுவே லவனே.

10. kArmAmisai kAlan varil kalabath
thErmAmisai vandhedhirap paduvAi
thArmArba valAri thalAri enum
sUrmA madiyath thodu vElavanE.

10. O, Lord, please come before me riding on the peacock with the plumage of beautiful feathers, and graciously protect me when Yaman [‘death’] comes along riding on the dark male buffalo in order to capture my life! O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, Your chest is adorned with garlands, and You hurled the lance [when the demon Soorapanman was hiding in a mango-tree] and destroyed the demon, who is the enemy of Valaari’s [Indra’s] celestial abode!

11. கூகா என என் கிளை கூடி அழப்
போகா வகை, மெய்ப்பொருள் பேசியவா
நாகாசல வேலவ நாலு கவித்
தியாகா சுரலோக சிகாமணியே.

11. kUgA enaen kiLaikUdi azhap
pOgAvagai meipporuL pEsiyavA
nAgAsala vElva nAlukavith
thyAgA suralOga sigAmaNiyE

11. O, Lord of the Universe, You have expounded the Real Wisdom to me, so that I shall not die when my relatives scream and cry together [over my impending death]! You are the Lord of the lance abiding on the Thirucengkotu-hill, known as Naagaacala. You are the great Lord who graciously grants the devotees the ability to sing of Your Sacred praise by composing four kinds of [Tamil] verses [known as aacu, mathuram, ciththiram and viththaaram]. You are the Foremost Gem of the celestial world!

12. செம்மான் மகளைத் திருடும் திருடன்
பெம்மான் முருகன், பிறவான், இறவான்
சும்மா இரு, சொல் அற .. என்றலுமே
அம்மா பொருள் ஒன்றும் அறிந்திலனே.

12. semmAn magaLaith thirudum thirudan
pemmAn murugan piRavAn iRavAn
summA iru sollaRa endRalumE
ammA poruL ondRum aRindhilanE

12. As soon as Thirumurugapperumaan, who knows of neither birth nor death, and who secretly took away Valli-ammaiyaar, born of the beautiful deer, imparted the teaching enjoining me to be in quietude without speaking, what a surprise that all the things of this world vanished!

13. ‘முருகன், தனிவேல் முனி, நம் குரு’ என்று
அருள் கொண்டு அறியார் அறியும் தரமோ
உரு அன்று, அரு அன்று, உளது அன்று,
இலது அன்று, இருள் அன்று, ஒளி அன்று
என நின்றதுவே.

13. murugan thanivEl muninam guruvendRu
aruLkoNdu aRiyAr aRiyum tharamO
uruvandRu aruvandRu uLadhandRu iladhandRu
iruLandRu oLiyandRu enanindRa dhuvE.

13. Does one, who does not know by virtue of the Lord’s Sacred Grace that the lance-bearing Lord Thirumurugapperumaan is our Supreme Teacher, have the ability to know of the Lord’s Sacred Grace? Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who is the Supreme Being is neither one of form, nor formlessness, nor an entity, which exists, nor an entity, which does not exist, nor a thing surrounded by darkness, nor a thing full of effulgence!

14. கைவாய் கதிர்வேல் முருகன் கழல்பெற்று
உய்வாய், மனனே, ஒழிவாய் ஒழிவாய்
மெய் வாய் விழி நாசியொடும் செவி ஆம்
ஐவாய் வழி செல்லும் அவாவினையே.

14. kaivAi kathirvEl murugan kazhalpetRu
uivAi mananE ozhivAi ozhivAi
meivAi vizhinAsi yodum seviyAm
aivAi vazhi sellum avAvinaiyE.

14. O, mind! You’d better reach the heroic anklets-adorned Sacred Feet of Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who holds the lustrous lance in His Sacred hand, and attain liberation! You’d better renounce firmly the desires arising through the five sense-organs, namely, the body, the mouth, the eyes, the nose, and the ears!

15. முருகன், குமரன், குகன், என்று மொழிந்து
உருகும் செயல் தந்து, உணர்வு என்று அருள்வாய்?
பொரு புங்கவரும், புவியும் பரவும்
குருபுங்கவ, எண் குண பஞ்சரனே.

15. murugan kumaran guhanendRu mozhindhu
urugum seyalthandhu uNarvendRu aruLvAi
poru punggavarum puviyum paravum
gurupunggava eNguna panjaranE.

15. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the Supreme Preceptor, abiding in the abode, made of eight divine qualities [namely, self-existence, purity, natural wisdom, perfect wisdom, detachment, magnanimous grace, omnipotence, and limitless bliss]! You are the Lord, who is adored and praised by the pious celestials and the dwellers of the earth, and they anxiously enquire when You will graciously grant them the melting devotional act and wisdom of adoring You as Murugaa! Kumaraa! Kugaa!

16. பேராசை எனும் பிணியில் பிணிபட்டு
ஓரா வினையேன் உழலத் தகுமோ?
வீரா, முது சூர் பட வேல் எறியும்
சூரா, சுர லோக துரந்தரனே.

16. pErAsai enum piNiyil piNipattu
OrA vinaiyEn uzhalath thagumO
veerA mudhusUr padavEl eRiyum
sUrA suralOga thurandharanE

16. Is it proper that I should wander around by being bound by the disease of greediness by undertaking deeds without examining and knowing what is good and bad? O Lord, You are the Supreme divine hero, who released the weapon of lance, so that the ancient demon Soorapanman should die and perish, and thus You graciously protected the world of the celestials!

17. யாம் ஓதிய கல்வியும், எம் அறிவும்
தாமே பெற, வேலவர் தந்ததனால்
பூ மேல் மயல் போய் அறம் மெய்ப் புணர்வீர்
நாமேல் நடவீர், நடவீர் இனியே.

17. yAmOdhiya kalviyum emmaRivum
thAmEpeRa vElavar thandhadhanAl
pUmEl mayalpOi aRameip puNarveer
nAmEl nadaveer nadaveer iniyE

17. Because it is Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who is holding the weapon of lance, and who has graciously granted us the boon of knowledge and wisdom, (O, people of the world!) as long as you are in this earthly world, you should get rid of the illusion arising from desire, and join the path of righteousness by carrying out righteous deeds and truthfulness. Moreover, with the tongue, bestowed upon you by Lord Thirumurugapperumaan as a boon, you should keep on reciting the glory of the Supreme Being.

18. உதியா, மரியா, உணரா, மறவா,
விதி மால் அறியா விமலன் புதல்வா,
அதிகா, அநகா, அபயா, அமரா
பதி காவல, சூர பயங் கரனே.

18. udhiyA mariyA uNarA maRavA
vidhimAl aRiyA vimalan pudhalvA
adhigA anagA abhayA amarA
padhi kAvala sUra bhayangaranE

18. O, Lord, You are the Divine Son of the pure being Lord Sivaperumaan, and You are one, who is neither born, nor dies, neither remembers nor forgets, and whom neither Brahmaa nor Thirumaal knows. You are the ultimate Supreme Being, who is sinless, who grants refuge to all devotees, protects the celestial world, and causes fear to the demon Soorapanman!

19. வடிவும் தனமும் மனமும் குணமும்
குடியும் குலமும் குடிபோ கியவா
அடி அந்தம் இலா அயில் வேல் அரசே
மிடி என்று ஒரு பாவி வெளிப்படினே.

19. vadivum dhanamum manamum guNamum
kudiyum kulamum kudi pOgiyavA
adiyandham ilA ayilvEl arasE
midi endRoru pAvi veLippadinE.

19. O, Supreme Ruler of the Universe! [It is strange, indeed, that] no sooner does the sinful poverty appear, beauty as well as wealth, good mind and character, and the greatness of family and lineage also desert a person!

20. அரிதாகிய மெய்ப் பொருளுக்கு அடியேன்
உரிதா உபதேசம் உணர்த்தியவா
விரிதாரண, விக்ரம வேள், இமையோர்
புரிதாரக, நாக புரந்தரனே.

20. aridhAgiya meipporuLukku adiyEn
uridhA upadEsam uNarthiyavA
viridhAraNa vikrama vELimaiyOr
purithAraga nAga purandharanE

20. O, Lord, [It is, indeed, a matter of wonder that] You have graciously considered me as a suitable person to receive the Real Truth, which is difficult to obtain, and have graciously imparted Your teaching to me! O, Lord! You are the Supreme Pranava Being, possessing the very strong and eternal divine valour, being willingly contemplated by the celestials! You are the upholder of the celestial world!

21. கருதா மறவா நெறிகாண, எனக்கு
இருதாள் வனசம் தர என்று இசைவாய்
வரதா, முருகா, மயில் வாகனனே
விரதா, சுர சூர விபாடணனே.

21. karudhA maRavA neRikANa enakku
iruthAL vanasanthara endRu isaivAi
varadhA murugA mayil vAgananE
viradhA surasUra vipAdaNanE.

21. Please be compassionate enough to grant me the boon of attaining Your lotus-flower-like Sacred Feet, so that I could have the means of seeking the spiritual status, bereft of both memory and forgetfulness! O, God Thirumurugapperumaan! You are riding the peacock as the vehicle, and You are graciously granting all the boons asked by Your devotees! You are the Lord, who split open the ugly demon Soorapanman with Your weapon of lance!

22. காளைக் குமரேசன் எனக் கருதித்
தாளைப் பணியத் தவம் எய்தியவா
பாளைக் குழல் வள்ளி பதம் பணியும்
வேளைச் சுர பூபதி, மேருவையே.

22. kALaik kumarEsan enak karudhi
thALaip paNiyath dhavam yeidhiyavA
pALaikkuzhal vaLLi padham paNiyum
vELai surabhUpadhi mEruvaiye

22. It is really a matter of wonder that I obtained the boon of great penance by contemplating the Sacred Feet of Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who is the Lord cherishing the Sacred Feet of Valli-ammaiyaar, having long tresses of hair like the flower sheath of the [coconut] palm tree, and He is the Supreme Ruler of the celestials, and is great like the Mahaameru mountain.

23. அடியைக் குறியாது அறியா மையினால்
முடியக் கெடவோ? முறையோ? முறையோ?
வடி விக்ரம வேல் மகிபா, குறமின்
கொடியைப் புணரும் குண பூதரனே.

23. adiyaik kuRiyAdhu aRiyAmaiyinAl
mudiyak kedavO muRaiyO muRaiyO
vadivikkrama vEl magipA kuRamin
kodiyaip puNarum guNa bhUdharanE

23. Should I entirely perish without meditating upon Your Sacred Feet because of (my) ignorance? Is it right? O, Supreme King (of the world), who holds the weapon of lance possessing sharpness and prowess, and who is united with the creeper-like hunter-maiden Valli-ammaiyaar!

24. கூர்வேல் விழி மங்கையர் கொங்கையிலே
சேர்வேன், அருள் சேரவும் எண்ணுமதோ
சூர் வேரொடு குன்று தொளைத்த நெடும்
போர் வேல, புரந்தர பூபதியே.

24. kUrvElvizhi manggaiyar konggaiyilEe
sErvEn aruL sEravum eNNumadhO
sUrvErodu kundRu thoLaiththa nedum
pOrvEla purandhara bhUpadhiye.

24. Will my mind being inclined to hug the breasts of women, who have eyes as sharp as the lance, have the good fortune of thinking of obtaining Your Sacred Grace? O, The Supreme Ruler of the world, You have the long and great warring lance, which pierced through to the roots and destroyed the mango-tree and the kaunca-hill, into which the demon Soorapanman had transformed himself!

25. மெய்யே என வெவ்வினை வாழ்வை உகந்து
ஐயோ, அடியேன் அலையத் தகுமோ?
கையோ, அயிலோ, கழலோ முழுதும்
செய்யோய், மயில் ஏறிய சேவகனே.

25. meiyEyena vevvinai vAzhvai ugandhu
aiyyO adiyEn alayath thagumO
kaiyO ayilO kazhalO muzhudhum
seiyOy mayilERiya sEvaganE.

25. Is it right that I should wander, by regarding this life of cruel deeds as the real life, and being delighted in it? O, Lord, not only Your Sacred Hands, but also the weapon of lance, held by Your hand, and the Sacred Feet, adorned with heroic anklets, are all of red complexion, and You are the Great warrior riding on Your vehicle of peacock!

26. ஆதாரம் இலேன், அருளைப் பெறவே
நீதான் ஒரு சற்றும் நினைந்திலையே
வேதாகம ஞான விநோத, மன
அதீதா சுரலோக சிகாமணியே.

26. AadhAramilEn aruLaip peRavE
needhAn orusattRum ninaindhilaiyE
vEdhAgama gnAna vinOdhamanO
theethA suralOga sigAmaNiyE

26. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the Supreme Jewel of the celestial world! As Your devotee, I have no other companion, and yet You do not think even a little about me attaining Your Sacred Grace! You are the Lord, who is adored by the Vedas and the Aagamas! You are the Supreme Being of the Vedas! You are the Lord, who brought the Vedas into being! You are the Lord, who brought the Aagamas into existence! You are the Sacred personification of rare spiritual wisdom! You are beyond the reach of the mind!

27. மின்னே நிகர் வாழ்வை விரும்பிய யான்
என்னே விதியின் பயன் இங்கு இதுவோ?
பொன்னே, மணியே, பொருளே, அருளே,
மன்னே, மயில் ஏறிய வானவனே

27. minnEnigar vAzhvai virumbiya yAn
EnnEvidhiyin payaningu idhuvO
ponnEmaNiyE poruLE aruLE
mannEmayilERiya vAnavanE

27. Is it because of the result of my past deeds that I am fond of the ephemeral life, which appears and vanishes like the flash of lightning? O, Lord! You are the personification of gold, jewel, wealth, the grace of liberation, the Supreme King reigning over the world, and the Supreme Celestial Being, riding the vehicle of peacock!

28. ஆனா அமுதே, அயில் வேல் அரசே,
ஞானாகரனே, நவிலத் தகுமோ?
யான் ஆகிய என்னை விழுங்கி, வெறும்
தானாய் நிலை நின்றது தற்பரமே.

28. AanA amudhE ayilvEl arasE
gnAnAkaranE navilath thagumO
yAnAgiya ennai vizhungi veRum
thAnAi nilai nindRadhu thaRparamE

28. O, Lord, You are the ambrosia of eternity! You are the Supreme Ruler holding the weapon of lance! You are the abode of spiritual wisdom! Could You please explain the supreme divine state, whereby You were gracious enough to accept an egoistic person like myself as Your devotee, become everything Yourself, and yet remain the eternal Supreme Being?

29. இல்லே எனும் மாயையில் இட்டனை நீ
பொல்லேன் அறியாமை பொறுத்திலையே
மல்லேபுரி பன்னிரு வாகுவில் என்
சொல்லே புனையும் சுடர் வேலவனே.

29. yillE enum mAyaiyil ittanai nee
pollEn aRiyAmai poRuththilaiyE
mallEpuri panniru vAguvil en
sollE punaiyum sudar vElavanE

29. O, Lord, You have caused me to be entangled in the illusory married life; [however] You have not granted me the boon of forgiving my ignorance! You are wearing the garlands consisting of the words of my adoration on Your twelve shoulders meant for wrestling, and You are the bearer of the lustrous lance!

30. செவ்வான் உருவில் திகழ் வேலவன், அன்று
ஒவ்வாதது என உணர்வித் ததுதான்
அவ்வாறு அறிவார் அறிகின்றது அலால்
எவ்வாறு ஒருவர்க்கு இசைவிப்பதுவே.

30. sevvA-nuruvil thigazh vElavan andRu
ovvAdhadhena uNarviththa dhuthAn
avvARu aRivAr aRigindRadhu alAl
evvARu oruvaRkku isaivippadhuvE

30. The unique spiritual wisdom which Lord Thirumurugapperumaan, who is in the form of red-complexioned sky, and is holding the weapon of lance, graciously expounded to me on that day, could only be known and experienced by one, and how could one tell others about it?

31. பாழ்வாழ்வு எனும் இப் படுமாயையிலே
வீழ்வாய் என என்னை விதித்தனையே
தாழ்வானவை செய்தன தாம் உளவோ?
வாழ்வாய் இனி நீ மயில் வாகனனே.

31. pAzhvAzhvu enum ippadu mAyaiyilE
veezhvAi ena ennai vidhiththanaiyE
thAzhvAnavai seidhanathAm uLavO

31. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You have the peacock as Your vehicle! You have determined that I should fall into this huge illusory swirl known as the life which is bound to be ruined! Are there any despicable deeds done by me already, which are the reason for pushing me to be entangled in this illusory life? Whatever it may be, may You live long!


32. கலையே பதறிக், கதறித் தலையூடு
அலையே படுமாறு, அதுவாய் விடவோ?
கொலையே புரி வேடர் குலப் பிடிதோய்
மலையே, மலை கூறிடு வாகையனே.

32. kalaiyE padhaRik kadhaRith thalaiyUdu
alaiyE padumARu adhuvAi vidavO
kolaiyEpuri vEdarkulap pidithOi
malaiyE malaikURidu vAgaiyanE.

32. O, Lord! You are holding the lance of victory! Shall I hastily and with bewilderment memorize only the books of art, and experience the agony in my head? O, Lord! You are united with the marauding hunter’s female elephant-like maiden Valli-ammayaar, and You are the mountain-like God! You split open the Kraunca-hill, where the demon Soorapanman was hiding, with the lance of victory!

33. சிந்தாகுல இல்லொடு செல்வம் எனும்
விந்தாடவி என்று விடப் பெறுவேன்
மந்தாகினி தந்த வரோதயனே
கந்தா, முருகா, கருணாகரனே.

33. sinthAkula illodu selvamenum
vinthAdavi endRu vidappeRuvEn
mandhAkini thandha varOdhyanE
kandhA murugA karunAgaranE.

33. O, Lord! You were born of the Ganges river! You are the abode of boons and compassion! O, Lord Kanthaa! O, Lord Thirumurugaa! When will I let go of the complex swirl of domestic life, afflicting the mind, and of the wealth, which is like the jungle of Vindhya mountain range?

34. சிங்கார மடந்தையர் தீநெறி போய்
மங்காமல் எனக்கு வரம் தருவாய்
சங்க்ராம சிகாவல, சண்முகனே
கங்காநதி பால, க்ருபாகரனே.

34. singgAra madandhaiyar theeneRi pOi
manggAmal enakku varam tharuvAi
sankrAma sighAvala shaNmuganE
ganggAnadhi bAla krupAgaranE.

34. O, Lord, who has the invincible peacock as the vehicle! You are the God of six Sacred Faces! You are the infant of the Ganges river! You are the abode of compassion! Please grant me the boon, so that my mind will not be bewildered by following the evil path because of pretty women!

35. விதிகாணும் உடம்பை விடா வினையேன்
கதிகாண மலர்க் கழல் என்று அருள்வாய்?
மதி வாள்நுதல் வள்ளியை அல்லது பின்
துதியா விரதா, சுர பூபதியே.

35. vidhikANum udambai vidA vinaiyEn
gadhikAna malarkkazhal endRu aruLvAi
madhivAnudhaL vaLLiyai alladhupin
thudhiyA viradhA surabhUpadhiyE

35. O, Lord, You have vowed not to adore anyone else except Valli-ammaiyaar, whose forehead is like the bright crescent moon! O, the Supreme King of the celestials! When will You graciously grant me Your red lotus-like and heroic anklets-worn Sacred Feet, so that I may attain mukthi [liberation] by forsaking the deeds-ridden body created by Brahmaa?

36. நாதா, குமரா நம என்று அரனார்
ஓதாய் என ஓதியது எப்பொருள் தான்?
வேதா முதல் விண்ணவர் சூடும் மலர்ப்
பாதா குறமின் பத சேகரனே.

36. nAthA kumarA namaendRu aranAr
OdhAi ena Odhiyadhu epporuLthAn
vEdhAmudhal viNNavar sUdumalar
pAdhA kuRamin padhasEgaranE.

36. O, Lord, who has red lotus-flower-like Sacred Feet, which Brahmaa and the other celestials wear on the top of their heads! O, Lord, You have Valli-ammmaiyar’s Sacred Feet over Your Head! What is the meaning of the Sacred [pranava] mantra which You graciously expounded to Lord Sivaperumaan, who addressed You as Naathaa, and adored You with the mantra ‘Kumaraaya nama’?

37. கிரிவாய் விடு விக்ரம வேல் இறையோன்
பரிவாரம் எனும் பதம் மேவலையே
புரிவாய் மனனே பொறையாம் அறிவால்
அரிவாய் அடியோடும் அகந்தையையே.

37. girivAi vidu vikrama vEl iRaiyOn
parivAram enum padham mEvalaiyE
purivAi mananE poRaiyAm aRivAl
arivAi adiyOdum agandhaiyaiyE.

37. O, mind! You’d better wish to attain only the position of belonging to the group of devotees, who adore Thirumurugapperumaan, who holds the powerful lance, which the Lord hurled at the Kraunca-hill [wherein the demon Soorapanman had hidden]! You’d better also cut off and cast away the self-oriented egoism completely [with its roots] by means of wisdom of patience!

38. ஆதாளியை, ஒன்று அறியேனை அறத்
தீது ஆளியை ஆண்டது செப்புமதோ
கூதாள கிராத குலிக்கு இறைவா
வேதாள கணம் புகழ் வேலவனே.

38. AadhALiyai ondRu aRiyEnai aRath
theedhALiyai AaNdadhu seppumathO
kUdhALa kirAtha kulikku iRaivA
vEdhALa gaNam pugazh vElavanE.

38. O, Lord, who is adorned with the garland of koothalam! You are the Lord of Valli-ammaiyaar! You are the God, who holds the lance, and You are adored by the group of spirits (imps)! Am I capable of applauding Your gracious compassion for having accepted me as a devotee, though I am one of vain speech and evil character?

39. மாஏழ் சனனம் கெட மாயைவிடா
மூஏடணை என்று முடிந்திடுமோ
கோவே, குறமின் கொடிதோள் புணரும்
தேவே சிவ சங்கர தேசிகனே.

39. mAvEzh sananam keda mAyaividA
mUvEdanai endRu mudindhidumO
kOvE kuRamin kOdithOL puNarum
dhEvE sivasankara dhEsiganE.

39. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the Great King ruling the world! O, God! You are united with the shoulders of Valli-ammaiyaar, who is of hunters’ clan, and is like the tender lightning-like creeper! You are the Lord, who was the Preceptor to Lord Sivaperumaan! When will the three kinds of never ending delusionary desires [for earth, woman, and gold] come to an end, so that the huge cycle of sevenfold-birth will be removed?

40. வினை ஓட விடும் கதிர் வேல் மறவேன்
மனையோடு தியங்கி மயங்கிடவோ?
சுனையோடு, அருவித் துறையோடு, பசுந்
தினையோடு, இதணோடு திரிந்தவனே.

40. vinaiyOda vidum kathirvEl maRavEn
manaiyOdu thiyanggi mayanggidavO
sunaiyOdu aruvith thuRaiyOdu pasum
thinaiyOdu ithaNOdu thirindhavanE.

40. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You wandered in the midst of streams, waterfalls, and greenish millet fields [in order to find Valli-ammaiyaar]! I shall not forget Your lustrous lance, which drives away the result of past deeds! Should a devotee like me be bereft of wisdom, bewildered, and stupefied after being caught in married life?

41. சாகாது, எனையே சரணங் களிலே
கா கா, நமனார் கலகம் செயும் நாள்
வாகா, முருகா, மயில் வாகனனே
யோகா, சிவ ஞான உபதேசிகனே.

41. sAgA dhenaiyE saraNanggaLilE
kAkA namanAr kalagam seyunAl
vAgA murugA mayil vAgananE
yOgA sivagnAna ubadhEsiganE.

41. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You have the lance, capable of bringing victory! You have the peacock as the vehicle! You are God of Yoga! You are the Lord-Preceptor, who expounded the wisdom [concerning the pranava-mantra] to Lord Sivaperumaan! Please protect me by enabling me to reach Your Sacred Feet without dying on the day when Yaman (death) comes along to capture my life!

42. குறியைக் குறியாது குறித்து அறியும்
நெறியைத் தனிவேலை நிகழ்த்திடலும்
செறிவு அற்று, உலகோடு உரை சிந்தையும் அற்று
அறிவு அற்று, அறியாமையும் அற்றதுவே.

42. kuRiyaik kuRiyAthu kuRithhu aRiyum
neRiyaith thani vElai nigazhth thidalum
seRivattRu ulagOdu uRaisindhaiyum attRu
aRivattRu aRiyAmaiyum attRadhuvE.

42. The close relationships, which I have with the world’s people, as well as [my] speech, mind, knowledge and ignorance, were all removed and destroyed as soon as Thirumurugapperumaan, who has the unique great lance, graciously expounded to me [the method of meditating upon a thing by meditating upon the God’s wisdom instead of meditating upon the knowledge concerning the soul and one’s attachment to things and persons]!

43. தூசா மணியும் துகிலும் புனைவாள்
நேசா முருகா நினது அன்பு அருளால்
ஆசா நிகளம் துகளாயின பின்
பேசா அநுபூதி பிறந்ததுவே.

43. thUsA maNiyum thugilum punaivAL
nesA murugA ninadhu anbaruLAl
AasA nigaLam thugaLAyina pin
pEsA anubhUdhi piRandhadhuvE.

43. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the loving companion of Valli-ammaiyaar, who is of the hunters’ clan, and who is adorned with garments and ornaments of precious gems including pearl and emerald! After the fetters of my desire became smithereens by virtue of Your loving and gracious blessings, the practical wisdom of quietude came into being!

44. சாடும் தனிவேல் முருகன் சரணம்
சூடும் படி தந்தது சொல்லு மதோ?
வீடும், சுரர் மாமுடி, வேதமும், வெம்
காடும், புனமும் கமழும் கழலே.

44. sAdum thanivEl murugan saraNam
sUdumpadi thandhadhu sollumadhO
veedum surarmAmudi vEdhamum vem
kAdum punamum kamazhum kazhalE.

44. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaaan! You have the unique weapon of lance, which pierces through the enemies and destroys them! Will I ever be able to say how great is the blessings of compassion, which You have graciously granted me, so that I could wear over my head Your heroic anklets-adorned Sacred Feet, which are prominent in the abode of mukthi (liberation), as well as over the celestials’ heads, the four Vedas, the cruel jungle, and the millet field?

45. கரவாகிய கல்வி உளார் கடை சென்று
இரவா வகை மெய்ப் பொருள் ஈகுவையோ?
குரவா, குமரா, குலிசாயுத, குஞ்
சரவா, சிவயோக தயாபரனே.

45. karavAgiya kalviyuLAr kadai sendRu
iravAvagai meipporuL eeguvaiyO
kuravA kumarA kulisAyudha kun
jaravA sivayOga dhayAparanE.

45. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the Preceptor (to Lord Sivaperumaan)! You have the kulicaayutham (‘thunderbolt’)! You have the elephant (known as the pinimukam) as the vehicle! You are the Lord of compassion, who grants me the blessings of Siva-Yokam! Will You graciously grant me the blessings of real (spiritual) wisdom, so that I shall not go and beg for knowledge from those, who selfishly keep the knowledge, which they have learnt, without expounding it to others for their benefit?

46. எம் தாயும் எனக்கு அருள் தந்தையும் நீ
சிந்தாகுலம் ஆனவை தீர்த்து எனையாள்
கந்தா, கதிர் வேலவனே, உமையாள்
மைந்தா, குமரா, மறை நாயகனே.

46. enthAyum enakkaruL thandhaiyum nee
sinthAkula mAnavai theerthenai AaL
kandhA kadhir vElavanE umaiyAL
maindhA kumarA maRainAyaganE.

46. O, Lord Kanthapperumaan! You have the lustrous weapon of lance! You are the beloved Divine Son of Umaathevi! O, Lord Kumaraa! You are the Lord of the Vedas! You are my mother, and father bestowing me grace! Please accept me as Your devotee by removing all the sufferings of my mind!

47. ஆறு ஆறையும் நீத்து அதன் மேல் நிலையைப்
பேறா அடியேன், பெறுமாறு உளதோ?
சீறாவரு சூர் சிதைவித்து, இமையோர்
கூறா உலகம் குளிர்வித்தவனே.

47. AaR AaRaiyum neeththu adhanmEl nilaiyaip
pERA adiyEn peRumARu uLadhO
seeRAvarusUr sidhaiviththu imaiyOr
kUrA ulagam kuLirviththavanE.

47. O, Lord Thirumurugapperumaan! You destroyed the angry demon Soorapanman, and made the celestials’ golden world a cooler habitat for them! Is there any likelihood that I would attain the stage beyond the thirty-six levels of spiritual philosophical systems [namely, 24 systems concerning soul, seven systems concerning knowledge, and five systems concerning Sivam]?

48. அறிவு ஒன்று அற நின்று, அறிவார் அறிவில்
பிறிவு ஒன்று அற நின்ற, பிரான் அலையோ?
செறிவு ஒன்று அற வந்து, இருளே சிதைய
வெறி வென்றவரோடு உறும் வேலவனே.

48. aRivondRaRa nindRu aRivAr aRivil
piRivondRaRa nindRa pirAn alaiyO
seRivondRaRa vandhu iruLE sidhaiya
veRi vendRavarOdu uRum vElavanE

48. O, God Thirumrukapperumaan! You are abiding in the form of spiritual wisdom without parting from the sages, who know You through Siva-consciousness beyond the consciousness of the soul! You are the God of lance, and You are abiding with the sages, who have conquered the mental illusion, so that the dark ignorance is destroyed when the close worldly relationships come to an end!

49. தன்னந் தனி நின்றது, தான் அறிய
இன்னம் ஒருவர்க்கு இசைவிப் பதுவோ?
மின்னும் கதிர் வேல் விகிர்தா, நினைவார்
கின்னம் களையும் க்ருபை சூழ் சுடரே.

49. thannanthani nindRadhu thAn aRiya
innam oruvarkku isaivippadhuvO
minnum kadhir – vEl vigirthA ninaivAr
kinnam kaLaiyum krubaisUzh sudarE

49. O. Lord Thirumur ugapperumaan! You hold the lustrous lance, and You are indeed unique! You are the Great Effulgence of compassion, which removes the sorrows of those, who meditate upon You! Could it ever possible for me to tell others the nature of the unique Supreme Being, who remains without any other support whatsoever?

50. மதிகெட்டு அறவாடி, மயங்கி, அறக்
கதிகெட்டு, அவமே கெடவோ கடவேன்?
நதி புத்திர, ஞான சுகாதிப, அத்
திதி புத்திரர் வீறு அடு சேவகனே.

50. madhikettu aRavAdi mayanggi aRak
gadhikettu avamE kedavO kadavEn
nadhipuththira gnAnasugAdhibavath
thidhi puththirar veeRadu sEvaganE

50. O, Lord! You are the Beloved Son of the river Ganges! You are the eternal abode of the bliss of divine wisdom! You are the Supreme Hero, who ruined and destroyed the pride of demons, who were the sons of a woman named Thithi! Am I destined to be bewildered, disillusioned, vainly ruined and destroyed bereft of the path of attaining mukthi [liberation]?

51. உருவாய் அருவாய், உளதாய் இலதாய்
மருவாய் மலராய், மணியாய் ஒளியாய்க்
கருவாய் உயிராய்க், கதியாய் விதியாய்க்
குருவாய் வருவாய், அருள்வாய் குகனே.

51. uruvAi aruvAi uLadhAi iladhAi
maruvAi malarAi maNiyAi oLiyAi
karuvAi uyirAi gathiyAi vidhiyAi
guruvAi varuvAi aruLvAi guganE.

51. O, God Thirumurugapperumaan! You are the Preceptor (to Lord Sivaperumaan)! You are the Supreme Being, who has form, and who has no form! You are an existent being, and You are also an invisible being! You are the fragrance, and You are also the flower, having the fragrance! You are the precious gem, and You are also its lustre! You are the embryo, where the soul abides, and You are also the body and soul! You are the abode of mukthi [liberation] and You are also the destiny, which drives the soul to the abode of mukthi! May You be gracious enough to appear before me as the Preceptor and bestow me grace!
